In this blog, I will explain how you can revisit any past failure, improve it, and make a plan to give it another go with a much higher chance of success.
Now is a great time, in preparation for 2021, to look at any past failed New Year's resolutions that you have made.
You made a goal, and you failed! Let's immediately use far more positive language. I don't like the word 'failure', it is so negative and final.
Ok, you set a goal and you did not succeed, but treat it as a learning experience, and think of it as a positive.
As Einstein once famously said, "Repeating the same thing again and again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity".
So there is no point in trying to reach the same goal using the same methods or steps as you did previously.
Napoleon Hill states in 'Think and Grow Rich' that we should not give up on an idea because the first attempt failed, but analyse the approach taken and see how it can be improved on for the next attempt.
Also, in David Goggins' new book 'Can't Hurt Me', an amazing book of how he took on new challenges throughout his life to prove to himself and everyone else that he could be the best, he takes the same approach.
This approach allowed him to reach incredible achievements in his life including becoming one of the top US Navy SEALS. In his book, the final challenge to the reader is to analyse previous failures so that the next attempt can be more fruitful.
Simple, not easy. An analogy that comes to mind is that giving up smoking is extremely simple, do not put a cigarette in your mouth. Simple in concept but not easy in practice.
The 3 step process is as follows:
Step 1
Write down all the good things you did in your previous attempt. Include your intentions, how you were feeling, the actions you took, what you achieved, and the skills you learnt.
Include as much detail as you can.
Remember that you did a great job to even attempt something that you had not done before so give yourself a lot of credit.
You must also have learnt a bunch of things that you did not know previously. Feel really proud of yourself.
Now the difficult part.
Write down all the things that went wrong? Be brutally honest with yourself. It is all for a good cause .
Where did you go wrong?
What happened that was in your control, and what happened that was out of your control? Again, be detailed.
Step 2
Look at each part that went wrong and analyse how you can improve it.
How can you do better next time? Were you afraid to get out of your comfort zone? Did you make the wrong choices?
Did you forget your big WHY, or wasn't it big enough?
Did you not invest enough time, or enough money? Did you not ask for help? Were your expectations too high?
Step 3
Put a plan together to incorporate all of the things that you did right from Step 1, with the improved actions learnt from Step 2.
Learn from your mistakes. Be empowered. Be more determined. You learnt a lot, so build on that.
You now have a much better plan than the first attempt (if you had a plan at all?) and with the lessons now learnt, the next attempt is pretty much guaranteed to be more successful.
In Conclusion
This process can be very hard to work through. Your mind does not want to revisit the perceived failure, the pain. This is why it is not easy.
But it is crucial to your success.
Those who have succeeded have been through this process. Few, if any, became successful first time around. If they had given up after the first or any subsequent perceived failure, they would never have reached their success.
